Over 538,000 acres was burnt by the largest fire in Arizona history. Two (2) men have been caught for leaving their fire unattended. These picture were taking at Springerville and Edger AZ.

This road was 19 miles in the wilderness north of Cottonwood AZ. We went bye Sycamore Canyon where a lot of wild horse run loose. As usual we did not see any animals at all except a few birds and one (1) dead rattler that had been run over.

Yesterday some friends of ours along with Norma and I took the Metro Light rail from Mesa down though Phoenix to the end and then back. We stopped along the way to eat and have ice cream. Very enjoyable trip.

Desert Carmel, AZ

In 1970, we bought property here west of Casa Grande AZ on Hyw 84. The area was called Desert Carmel and this is where the Giants baseball team had their spring training. We sold it in 1982. The area flopped after the Giants moved and the copper mines closed.

The Hotel and golf coarse are still there. At the time we had no intention of moving to AZ as we are today.

Minneapolis

Driving down to Minneapolis we drove along the Mississippi River to see the bridge being rebuilt that fell into the river last summer. There were many interesting sites along the river.

In the blue building is the endless bridge, also we saw the locks, falls and other bridges.

St Cloud

We are in Rodgers MN at Camping World waiting to get our Norcold ice box fixed.

We drove up to St Cloud to see the city and on the way back got caught in a terrible rainstorm.
It rained so hard that we could not see the highway and had to pull off until it went bye. There was a lot of tree damage but no problems with our car or motorhome.

Danbury Visit

We visited with some friends from AZ and they took us on a trip around their lake. Very interesting sightings like an eagle and some loons.

Apostle Islands

Yesterday, we took a tour of the 22 Apostle Islands which is located in the Northern most part of Wisconsin. What a fantastic trip with such beautiful scenery. The Islands are part of Lake Superior.

Great Hinckley Fire

In 1894 two (2) fires met creating a huge firestorm (ie the perfect storm). Over 400 people lost their lives. The fire reached a height of 20,000 feet and was seen as far away as Iowa. Six (6) towns were lost completely.

Duluth

Duluth is a beautiful city of about 86,000. We took tours of a Coast Guard Cutter and a 600 ft ore ship. Also visit many other sites in this city on Lake Superior.

Mille Lacs

St Croix

After riding along the Wild River we crossed over into Wisconsin to St Croix. A very nice little town that we had remembered we had been too years ago. This river was also very high.

Yesterday we left for a drive along the Wild River in MN. As we passed the small wide place in the road of Sunrise MN we saw a sign that led us in town.

To our surprise this was the birthplace of movie star Richard Widmark.

Des Moines Zoo

As we are "Friends of the ZOO" we try to see all zoo's along the way. This one in Des Moines is small, but has a lot of good shows.

Just did some research and counted places we have camped since we started fulltiming in 2000.

So far, we have camped at 501 campgrounds. Thats a lot of unhooking and hooking up.

Sorry to leave Des Moines as we did not get to see all we wanted to because of the flooding, but suspect we will back through here in the future.

Des Moines 08 Floods

We intended to spend a week in Des Moines seeing the sites. Because of the flooding we have not seen much except flooding. These pictures were taken along I35/I80. As you can see the water is almost up to the interstate.

We are spending the holiday weekend at a casio in Kansas City. Going out with friends today and Monday visiting our daughter, son -in-law and grandkids.

Tuesday, we will be leaving for Kirksville MO and the MO Holiday rally.

Pretty much rained all night and supposed to get more today.

What we save in camping fees, we probably lose at the casio.

Weston Mo

One of our favorite places to camp has always been Weston Bend state park in Missouri. Of course it helps that it is directly across the Missouri river from our grandkids.

The park has many trails, but the one we enjoy most is a 3 mile trails along a creek.

I remember as a kid swinging on grapevines like these.

We are now at Weston Bend State Park and will be here for the next week or so. It is right across the Missouri River from Leavenworth where our grandkids are.

On the Road Again

Monday we left Viewpoint in Mesa and got a new baseplate put on our CR-V for towing.

Tuesday we left AZ for Deming New Mexico.

Wed we stayed at Van Horn Texas.

Tonight we are at an Elks lodge in Sweetwater Texas.

This weekend we will be at our home Coast to Coast park in Thackerville OK.

So far we have stayed 1 day behind all the storms occurring in the midwest.

Nixon Library

One of our goals is to visit as many of the Presidential Libraries as we can. This trip while in LA we drove down to Yorba Linda to see the Richard Nixon Library.

Also located in the original homesite is where he was born.

Olive Mill Tour

What a wonderful time of the year. We are here in Mesa AZ where it is sunny and warm. Our son is coming over from LA on Sunday and we are going to the Cardinals football game. Then Monday we have tee time scheduled with some friends from Queen Creek. Christmas day, 10 of us are going for Christmas dinner at Painted Mountain.

Thursday we have a ball game scheduled so another busy week.

We are now at our winter site in Mesa. These pictures give a prespective of our site. The view of the Mountains are very nice. These are the Superstition Mts. where the Lost Dutchman Mine is located.

So far we have not had any more luck finding it that we have buying Power Ball tickets.

We are now in our winter site #5323 at Viewpoint RV & Golf Resort. This week we went offroading up in the Superstition and White Mountains. Some of the roads were pretty rough, but we made it through ok.

Pecans

While in New Mexico we visited this pecan farm. With 128,000 trees it is the largest producer of pecans in the world. They are getting ready to harvest so we did not get a tour of the factory, but got to watch a video and sample some of the product.

Abilene Texas

We spent two (2) days in Abilene and enyoyed the town very much. We visited their small but very nice zoo. What we really enjoyed was a museum call Frontier Texas ( a must see). It covered the years from 1770 to 1870 and told the story of the real people who developed Texas, not the ones you see in the movies.

It was narrated by Buck Taylor (Newly of the old Gunsmoke TV show).

Ft. Worth Stockyards

This area has been turned into a big tourist attraction. Many shops, eating establishments etc.

They also have a real cattle drive down the street like it used to be in the late 1800's.

Yesterday we visited the Gene Autry museum located in Gene Autry Oklahoma. It is located here because he had a big ranch near here. The town was rename this as a result.

Melvern Lake

Council Grove on the Santa Fe Trail

Yesterday we drove to Council Grove where the Santa Fe Trail crossed the Neoseo River. This was a shallow area and easily forded. Many historic buildings here as this was the last place to stock up on suppies before getting into county with little to no towns until they got to Santa Fe.

We ate at the Hays House which has been serving meals since 1857. Food was good.

Tall Grass Prairie National Preserve

We visited one of the last prairies in the nation yesterday. This preserve location in south central Kansas consist of some 10,000 acres and includes the remains of the Spring Hill Ranch later know as the Z Bar Ranch.

We took a tour where the Ranger explained all the grasses and the rocks. The preserve is located in the Flint Hills.

Yesterday I had my last chemo and today I will have my last radiation. Then we will be free to go where we want.
Thursday we will have our new main awning put on.
Next Monday we will leave for the Six State FMCA rally.
This weekend we will be at Clinton Lake and meet friends from St Louis.

McDonalds

Everyone knows how I like McDonalds. So last weekend our KC camping family fixed us up at the campout in Wallace State Park MO.

We were gone for a while so they got a bunch of banners and lights from one of the local micky'ds and decorated our coach.

In addition we received a blanket, gift certificates, lights and a lot of stuff from McDonalds.

A really great weekend for us.

Many people stopped and wanted to buy ice cream and coffee. They had never seen a 'rollin McDonalds' before.

Garage sale

Yesterday we helped our daughter with her garage sale. I was surprised at the number of people that attended those things. Some stop and some just drive by and stop and then drive on.
Today we will just kick back and watch the NASCAR race. It has been a busy week and next week will be more busy. Monday I start radiation, Tuesday our daughter will be induced and have our 4th grandchild, (its a girl). Friday I see my cnacer doctor again and find out what type of chemo I'll have.
As I keep saying, this retirement is just not working out. We don't have time to get everything in.

Tattoos

We are now at the Holiday International RV Rally in Du Quoin IL. There is about 850 to 900 RV's here. Has been a great rally so far as we have meet a lot of friends. In addition to our KC club, there is 12 from our Alaska caravan here.

Last nights entertainment was Roy Clark.

We will leave here Sat and return to Kansas City.

Next week I'll start my chemo and radiation.

Arrow Rock Missouri

This Historic site on the Boone's Lick Trail was very interesting. In central Missouri, this really was the start of the Santa Fe Trail. It was made famous during the early 1800's by Daniel Boone 2 son's who mined salt here very close to the Missouri River. It was also a stop on the Lewis & Clark trip up the Missouri.

A few days ago most of the stars of the movie, 'Tom Sawyer' returned here for a reunion. This movie was filmed here. Jody Foster was one of the stars.

Truman Library

After arriving in Kansas City, I had a lump removed from my shoulder which turned out to be cancer. After my doctor appointment on July 13th I will know what my treatment plan will be.

Have been getting a large amount of rain here in MO & KS. 20 inches in the last couple of days.

Branson

We spent two (2) weeks at Branson MO, camped on one of the arms of Lake Taneycomo. It went fast as we were busy, went to one (1) show, 'The Duttons', made a flying trip to St. Louis as my cousin pasted away, went to the home of 'Throwed Rolls' and other various activities. We stay at the Escapees park 'Turkey Creek'. Downtown at the waterfront is a whole new area called 'The Landing'. Huge amount of shops, watershows, eating and a 'Bass Pro' shop.

Pineville

Sat we drove from Branson west through the Ozarks Mtns to Pineville MO. A beautiful drive but very hilly and a lot of sharp curves. Ate lunch there at the only rest in town. Great hamburgers though. This took us all around the lake chains of Beaver, Table Rock and Lake Taneycomo. Today will be church, watching NASCAR (since it was rained out last night) washing the motorhome and taking Momma out for supper and a movie.
Monday will be getting the baseplate replaced on the car that was bent coming in. Not sure what I'll do for the 5 hours it will take to replace it. Nothing around the RV shop close.

Back in Branson

Thursday we again attempted to play golf, but again rain. This gave me a chance to check out the baseplate on the car which we noticed seem to be point downward. On coming into Branson last week I had to make an emergency stop as a pickup pulled out into a lane in front of us. Called Blue Ox and they sent me to a dealer. Bottomline is that the baseplate is bent and must be replaced before towing again. Don't think this should have happened.

St. Louis

Tuesday and Wed, Norma and I traveled from Branson to St. Louis to my cousins funeral. Sad time for the family. However we did get to see a lot of relatives that we had not seen for awhile.

Computer failure

Our old computer failed with a power supply problem and could not be fixed without replacing the motherboard.

So we bought a new one with Windows Vista. After a week I am still trying to get things to work.
What a mess. Every day is a fight to make a little progress, but most of my hardware won't work and there is no drivers available. Much of the software we had also won't work.

Am slowly replacing most of it.

Alamo Village

Alamo Village is a movie set located on a 22,000 acre working cattle ranch in Bracketville TX. The set was home to over 150 movies, tv shows and commercials. It was built originally for the John Wayne movie 'The Alamo'. All building are full buildings not just fronts. There are many many buildings as this is a full town. Another western is scheduled to start in 2 weeks. Many stars have been here to shoot their shows.

Langtry, Texas

Big Bend National Park

We had a wonderful time in Big Bend. The desert was in full bloom and this is one of the prettist place we have been. It is so vast, over 800,000 acres. It is 58 miles from the park entrance to the campground inside the park. We did a lot of off roading. One trip took 5 hours to go 28 miles as a four wheel drive is needed.

Mesilla, NM

Mesilla is located just south of Las Cruces NM and has a lot of history.In 1854 the American flag was raised here in the courtyard to signal the signing of the Gadsden Purchase.

The Butterfield Overland stage had a regional office here.

The William Bonney (Billy the Kid) Gallary is located here

At the building in the picture Billy the Kid was sentenced to death later to be shot by Marshal Pat Garret.

Hermanas Grand

Wed we traveled down the Hermanas Grand road from Deming to the Mexico border. On the way we saw a USAF Research site where we saw this big research balloon. Then on to Hachita NM which looked like a ghost town to us. Buildings all boarded up and nothing open. We ate at a Butterfield Stage stop on the way back to Deming.

Later on Norma and I played 18 holes of golf. She has started to play again.

Deming, NM

We left our winter RV park in Mesa yesterday and traveled to Deming NM. It is a little cooler here because we are much higher. We'll spend this week here and leave for Big Bend National Park after Easter.
We'll finish waxing the unit and washing the clothes that we have put off for the last week.

Deming is a very nice little town right on I10 and we have been here many times. We stopped at the Escapees park so we know a few people. We'll have a nice Easter dinner here on Sunday.

Today was another milestone as I turned 65 and went on medicare today. Substanial reduction in insurance cost.
Monday, another couple and us went hunting the site of a major payroll robbery that happen in AZ back in the 1800's. Some call it Bloody Gulch. Although we did not find the actual physical location we were very close. To get there we had to travel many dirt backroads.

Fun at Nextcare

After starting the morning doing my normal Friday job of washing clothes, my next fun thing was going to the Urgent Care with a case of bronchitis. After the X-ray and breathing test I wound up with antibotics and a pat on the back. What fun. Hopefully tomorrow I will be back to feeling almost human.

Well Christmas is behind us and the New Year is just ahead. 2006 has been a fine year for us with travels from San Diego to Maine and back to Mesa.
Mesa has not been great weather wise, alot of wind, cold and it has rained twice this last week. We also had fog the other day, a first since we have been to Arizona now five years.
We will not do anything New Years eve as there are to many crazy's out. Softball starts Jan 2 and I will try to play another year on these 65 year old knees.
Look forward to doing more 4 wheeling and hiking after the first of the year WHEN the weather warms up.
Expect some friends to arrive from Kansas City in the next few weeks. Will be glad to see them.

Off Roading by Kevin and Kerney

Sat we went on this 4 wheel drive road down by Kevin and Kerney AZ. This is some of the back county that is so pretty in AZ. The mountains are beautiful and the desert is wonderful. Saw a lot of tracks, but no animals this trip. The road or trails were so rough we could not get through without our 4 wheel SUV. Norma was afraid that we were going in the river at one point, but we didn't.

This cactus must be over 200 years old. They do not get arms until 75 years.

Dinner show

Last night we attended our first of the season regular Tuesday night dinner shows. The group was a country band by the name Rain & Country. Excellent show. Dinner was good also, with BBQ beef. Super buy for 10.50/person.

Globe

We drove up to Globe AZ, which is about 50 miles from Mesa. It is
a drive up through the mountains to about 4000 ft. Amazing how much difference in temperature there is between here and there. The weather has turned very cool here, but still is in the mid 60's during the day. Lot's of sun.

Trip to Laughlin

On Tuesday we did some offroading and went out to this old mining town where about forty burros just roam around free in the streets and town.

This is where we stayed in Laughlin. It used to be the Flamigo. Nice casino, but did not pay off well in our case.

Welcome to Arizona

Here in Mesa there is a huge amount of construction, thus gravel on the roads. Our welcome to the state consisted of a rock that chipped the windshield on the car. Lucky it was easy to plug and we did not have to get a new one.
Tomorrow we move to our permanent site for the winter.

Today is back to the RV shop to install a new rear air conditioner. They had to order a new one out of California as there was none in the Phoenix area that also had a heat pump.

RV Maintenance

Today we are sitting at a RV maintenance facility in Mesa. Getting preventive maint done on a coach that now has 65,000 miles on it. A lot of normal maint, but some special like replacing radiator hoses, checking brakes, repacking front wheels, air dryer maint and the likes.
Big item is the rear A/C compresser locked up and needs to be replaced. Goods new it is covered under our extended warrenty.
Will probably be here for at least another day.
Went to see Robin Williams last night in 'The Man of the Year', Ok, but not his best show.

We are back in what has become our home in Mesa AZ. We'll be here for the next 6 months at our RV park. We travelled over 11,000 miles this summer since leaving here last March. All the way from here to San Diego to Fryburg Maine and down the coast to North Carolina. Then down the Natchez Trace through LA, TX, NM and back to AZ.
Many things to do here to switch most of our finances and medical things from Overland Park, KS to Mesa.
When we do decided to get off the road(which is not close) we will settle around Mesa.

Yesterday we drove to Columbus NM to see what was there. It is close to the border.

Bummer, nothing much there but a nice drive in the desert.

Clean up day

After months of steady travel, yesterday was wash day for the motorhome and car. Now comes the waxing.

Gila Cliff National Park

Sat we drove up to the cliff dwelling which is about 90 miles from Deming,AZ
Indians lived there about 1270 AD. It is a long climb up.

Lincoln County wars

Thursday we were in Ruidoso New Mexico. Located very near there is the historic town of Lincoln. Many of the building are still as they were back in the 1870's. This is where the famous Lincoln County Wars occurred. Of course the most famous of the people involved was Billy Bonny (Billy the Kid).

Post, Texas

Today we drove to Post Texas. The last few days we were at a Corp of Engineers Park just west of Coleman Texas. Camped right on Hords Lake we had a beautiful view of the lake. There was a lot of deer and a animal that we usually only see dead by the road.

San Antonio

Sat we drove from Kerrville to San Antonio. There we went to the Riverwalk. There is a lot of construction going on down there.

Fredericksburg

Yesterday we went to Fredericksburg. It is a small town north of Kerrville with a lot of shops. Had fun sitting on the benches while the wife checked out the stores.

Think today we'll go to San Antonio.

Kerrville

We are now in Kerrville Texas as we drove up from Rockport yesterday. Stopped at Mathis Tx where diesel was $2.35/gal and gas was $2.09. Long time since we have seen it that low.

Raining again

Well it is time to leave this morning for Rockport Texas and it is raining cats and dogs. Usual for the Migets. Don't remember the last time we put the slides in when it was dry. This rain is a fallout from the hurricane that came in over Mexico. Yesterday was a day of football and a lot of frustration as the Chiefs lost again.
Always love hooking up in the rain.

Matagorda Peninsula

Today we drove over to the Matagorda Peninsula. Very unique place. We drove on the beach for about 4 miles up and 4 miles back. Used our 4 wheel drive as the sand was deep in spots. No way a non 4 wheel drive could get where we went. Very few people on the beach though.
Weather is still very hot closed to 92 with 100% humidity. A/C's just can't keep up. There is rain in the forecast so maybe that will cool things off a bit.

Port Lavaca

We are camped right on the beach at Port Lavaca Texas. We were here 4 years ago and it rained so hard we did not get to enjoy this part of the country. Today we are going to go up to Victoria to the zoo.
Driving through Houston yesterday was a hoot. What fun, but we bypassed the major jam on I10.

Home in Texas

We arrived back at our home park in Livingston Texas today. Will probably be here for a while as we need to get a bunch of resident stuff done like getting the car and motorhome inspected.
Good thing is gas is $2.35/gal. Hot though, 92 degrees today. Norma is volunteering at the day care center.
I need to get the car and motorhome cleaned up and just relax for a while.
We travelled a lot of miles this spring and summer, all the way from San Diego to Maine and back to Texas. After a while here we will head back to AZ for the winter.
